There seems to be a general unawareness that during World War II the United States kept over 400,000 German and Italian prisoners of war within the borders of our homeland. But I have the privilege of knowing this first hand. I suppose one would cal it a privilege, since our government is always good at keeping things from the folks, and over the years when I have remarked about the experience, I have been met with looks and gasps of disbelief. Due to the shortage of workers in America, twenty-five of those prisoners of war worked on my dad's cotton farm in Arkansas from 1943 to 1964.
